Design project of traditional Korean food, kimchi

“Kimchi Village” was inspired by my passion for Korean cuisine. I took the traditional—often perceived as outdated or dull—and revitalized it with vivid colors and contemporary graphic illustrations, transforming static dishes into animated characters. To highlight regional variations, I created illustration maps of different areas in South Korea, making it easy for readers to recognize the diverse origins of kimchi. Each page includes an embedded audio file to enhance the experience. The project was showcased at the ‘Unexpected Sides Exhibition’ from November 4-20, 2013, at the Amado Art Gallery in Seoul, Korea.

The project begins with an introduction to kimchi and its preparation process. Each ingredient is transformed into graphic elements to illustrate the various types of kimchi. As readers progress, they explore different regions of Korea and learn about the representative kimchi unique to each area.

Kimchi Making Event

It was so different from a lot of food making processes in the United States, so it was interesting to take part in Korean culture.
— Participant

As a researcher, I participated in a kimchi-making event with foreigners at the traditional museum in Jeonju. After the event, I interviewed participants to understand their impressions and what they learned from the kimchi-making experience, and how it differed from their own cuisines. I also presented the 'Kimchi Village' project to them and gathered valuable feedback.
